NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED AS EXODUS NORTH AMERICAN LEADERS GATHER TO CELEBRATE 35 YEARS IN MINISTRY

February 2, 2011 by Chris Stump

Orlando, FL – Exodus International, a global Christian ministry whose mission is mobilizing the Church to minister grace and truth to a world impacted by homosexuality, is beginning their 35th year with a brand-new website and a leadership conference.

Leaders from across North America will assemble in Orlando, FL for the annual Exodus Leadership Conference.  This year’s theme is simplify, amplify and intensify. As Exodus embarks on their 35th year, the leaders of their movement plan to bring greater clarity, awareness and a renewed focus to their mission.

When asked about the longevity of such a controversial ministry, Alan Chambers, President of Exodus International, says, “There is obviously an ongoing need to provide a biblical perspective that enables people to live out their sexuality in a way that is congruent to their faith and beliefs. For 35 years now, Exodus leaders from around the world have provided loving support to those struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions and have offered understanding, encouragement and counseling to friends and family members impacted by homosexuality.

To complement their new simplified focus, they are launching a new website, with a fresh, modern and streamlined look.

Jeff Buchanan, Director of Church Equipping and Student Ministries, who was instrumental in the redesign of the website says, “Many people have questions about sexuality and we want to have a voice in the conversation that offers a biblical perspective in a loving and Christ-like manner.  Having a more appealing and simple website has been a top priority since an online presence is one of the most effective ways to get our message out there.”

The website includes real stories of former homosexuals, a directory of the more than 240 Exodus affiliates throughout the country, information on equipping events, the Exodus blog and a special section for students.

Exodus Departs From ‘Day of Truth’

November 3, 2010 by Chris Stump

Exodus returns leadership of ‘Day of Truth’ to friend, Alliance Defense Fund

Orlando, FL- Exodus International, After 4 years of supporting the Day of Truth initiative and 1 year of spearheading the effort, Exodus International is returning the event to the Alliance Defense Fund.  ADF will likely find another group to run the event or end it altogether.  Created in 2005 by the Alliance Defense Fund as a response to the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) annual Day of Silence, Day of Truth was an effort aimed at encouraging conservatively-minded teenagers to respectfully engage fellow students in conversations about homosexuality.

“I believe that silence is a poor substitute for healthy and respectful cross-divide dialogue”, said Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, in an interview Wednesday with Dan Gilgoff of CNN’s Belief Blog, when sharing the original intent behind Exodus’ involvement with Day of Truth.  ”When I was a student struggling silently with same-sex attraction and contemplating my options I was desperate for a compassionate voice and real answers. Silence may draw attention to the issue, but it doesn’t offer help or support.”

Since its inception nearly 20,000 students have participated in Day of Truth with over 6,000 high-school students taking this year’s challenge to Get the Conversation Started.

“Even though we have reached a fair number of students”, said Chambers, “We believe that due to the timing of the event, Day of Truth was always perceived in an adversarial manner, and became more about policy than people.  That is in conflict with the mission we have chosen to embrace as an organization. We want to continue to promote dialogue and to equip Christian kids to reach out with compassion, grace and truth.  We don’t need to practice this once a year, but rather every day.”

Chambers along with leaders of Exodus Youth, a division of Exodus International, made the decision in late April that 2010 would mark the end of its short leadership of Day of Truth. They officially notified the Alliance Defense Fund last week of this change.

Exodus Returns to its birthplace for 35th anniversary conference

July 19, 2010 by Chris Stump

Exodus continues to move forward with longest running conference on homosexuality

Orlando, FL – Exodus International – the global Christian outreach whose mission is mobilizing the Church to minister grace and truth to a world impacted by homosexuality – will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Exodus International Freedom Conference on June 23rd – 26th in Irvine, CA.   The first gathering took place in nearby Anaheim, CA in September 1976.  Amidst controversy, 63 formerly gay-identified men and women gathered together for encouragement and support and ended up birthing a movement. 35 years later controversy remains, as does the original passion, vision and purpose.  One thing that has changed is the breadth of the ever-growing ministry that now encompasses outreaches on 6 continents boasting more than 300 ministries, a vibrant church association and an outreach to youth. Exodus Sends Letter Opposing Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill

November 16, 2009 by Exodus International

November 16, 2009

Exodus International sent the following letter to Uganda’s President Museveni regarding The Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 currently being considered in the Parliament. The bill would criminalize and prosecute homosexual behavior and would require pastors, missionaries, health care providers and counselors to report those suspected of such behavior. Exodus International, along with its board members and broader network, opposes this legislation as it inhibits the global Christian church’s mission to share the life-giving truth of the Gospel and extend the compassion of Christ to all.

New Book Offers Practical, Authentic Insight on Leaving Homosexuality

July 1, 2009 by Exodus International

Orlando, FL- A new book, released by Harvest House Publishers today, offers practical advice and honest information on the process of leaving a gay life to pursue one that reflects the Christian faith. Alan Chambers, President of Exodus International, the world’s largest ministry to those personally dealing with unwanted same-sex attraction, has written his second book Leaving Homosexuality: A Practical Guide for Men and Women Looking for a Way Out.

Chambers says the book marks a departure from the ambiguity of the “change is possible” message and details what kind of change is possible for someone struggling with unwanted homosexual feelings. Leaving Homosexuality clarifies expectations and tackles complicated questions with candor and pragmatism. Chambers shares insight from his own life on how to build authentic community, how to process and experience healing from unforgiveness and overcome the power of sexual addiction.

“This book is an honest look at what it means to painfully surrender your life to Jesus Christ and experience real transformation,” said Chambers. “While the road has not been easy, I’ve experienced joy and satisfaction that I never
knew was possible. My hope is that this book encourages others living beyond homosexuality with the hope that this journey can yield unexpected promise and blessing.”

Chambers’ first book, God’s Grace & the Homosexual Next Door: Reaching the Heart of the Gay Men and Women in Your World was published in 2007 and details how individuals and churches can become a haven for homosexuals seeking freedom from same-sex attraction.
