Apple Suppresses Diversity by Pulling iPhone Application

Apple Suppresses Diversity by Pulling iPhone Application

Orlando, FL- Last night, Apple removed an application submitted by Exodus International, a global Christian ministry helping those struggling with unwanted same-sex attraction to live a life congruent with biblical teaching. Apple told the ministry’s web developer that they deemed the app “offensive to large groups of people” and removed it. Exodus is encouraging people to contact Apple and ask them to recognize the diversity of beliefs within its customer base.

Apple originally approved the app which provided mobile access to the information available on the ministry’s web site and gave it 4+ rating, but pulled it after gay activist groups launched a petition to remove it. It now appears that the multinational corporation has caved, yet again, to their pressure. In November, Apple removed the application submitted by The Manhattan Declaration, a group of Christian leaders who support biblical teaching on marriage, as a result of pressure from the same gay activist groups.

“We are extremely disappointed to learn of Apple’s decision to deny equal representation in the public square,” said Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International. “Discrimination of thought and belief obstructs essential dialogue and authentic diversity,” said Chambers noting that Apple provides hundreds of apps specific to the GLBT community and has made the Gay Christian Network’s podcasts available on its iTunes store.

“Ultimately, this issue comes down to what we, as a culture, believe about equality and the freedom to express our beliefs,” said Chambers. “It is our hope that Apple will reconsider its decision and allow our organization to be part of the ongoing conversation about the challenging issues many face today.”

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED AS EXODUS NORTH AMERICAN LEADERS GATHER TO CELEBRATE 35 YEARS IN MINISTRY

February 2, 2011 by Melissa Condrey

Orlando, FL – Exodus International, a global Christian ministry whose mission is mobilizing the Church to minister grace and truth to a world impacted by homosexuality, is beginning their 35th year with a brand-new website and a leadership conference.

Leaders from across North America will assemble in Orlando, FL for the annual Exodus Leadership Conference.  This year’s theme is simplify, amplify and intensify. As Exodus embarks on their 35th year, the leaders of their movement plan to bring greater clarity, awareness and a renewed focus to their mission.

When asked about the longevity of such a controversial ministry, Alan Chambers, President of Exodus International, says, “There is obviously an ongoing need to provide a biblical perspective that enables people to live out their sexuality in a way that is congruent to their faith and beliefs. For 35 years now, Exodus leaders from around the world have provided loving support to those struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions and have offered understanding, encouragement and counseling to friends and family members impacted by homosexuality.

To complement their new simplified focus, they are launching a new website, with a fresh, modern and streamlined look.

Jeff Buchanan, Director of Church Equipping and Student Ministries, who was instrumental in the redesign of the website says, “Many people have questions about sexuality and we want to have a voice in the conversation that offers a biblical perspective in a loving and Christ-like manner.  Having a more appealing and simple website has been a top priority since an online presence is one of the most effective ways to get our message out there.”

The website includes real stories of former homosexuals, a directory of the more than 240 Exodus affiliates throughout the country, information on equipping events, the Exodus blog and a special section for students.

To arrange for an interview, please call the Exodus Press Office at (407) 599-6872 or (321) 279-8965.  For more information, please go to: www.exodusinternational.org

Exodus Departs From ‘Day of Truth’

November 3, 2010 by Melissa Condrey

Exodus returns leadership of ‘Day of Truth’ to friend, Alliance Defense Fund

Orlando, FL- Exodus International, After 4 years of supporting the Day of Truth initiative and 1 year of spearheading the effort, Exodus International is returning the event to the Alliance Defense Fund.  ADF will likely find another group to run the event or end it altogether.  Created in 2005 by the Alliance Defense Fund as a response to the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) annual Day of Silence, Day of Truth was an effort aimed at encouraging conservatively-minded teenagers to respectfully engage fellow students in conversations about homosexuality.

“I believe that silence is a poor substitute for healthy and respectful cross-divide dialogue”, said Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, in an interview Wednesday with Dan Gilgoff of CNN’s Belief Blog, when sharing the original intent behind Exodus’ involvement with Day of Truth.  ”When I was a student struggling silently with same-sex attraction and contemplating my options I was desperate for a compassionate voice and real answers. Silence may draw attention to the issue, but it doesn’t offer help or support.”

Since its inception nearly 20,000 students have participated in Day of Truth with over 6,000 high-school students taking this year’s challenge to Get the Conversation Started.

“Even though we have reached a fair number of students”, said Chambers, “We believe that due to the timing of the event, Day of Truth was always perceived in an adversarial manner, and became more about policy than people.  That is in conflict with the mission we have chosen to embrace as an organization. We want to continue to promote dialogue and to equip Christian kids to reach out with compassion, grace and truth.  We don’t need to practice this once a year, but rather every day.”

Chambers along with leaders of Exodus Youth, a division of Exodus International, made the decision in late April that 2010 would mark the end of its short leadership of Day of Truth. They officially notified the Alliance Defense Fund last week of this change.

July 19, 2010 by Melissa Condrey

Exodus Sends Letter Opposing Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill

November 16, 2009 by Exodus International

November 16, 2009

Exodus International sent the following letter to Uganda’s President Museveni regarding The Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 currently being considered in the Parliament. The bill would criminalize and prosecute homosexual behavior and would require pastors, missionaries, health care providers and counselors to report those suspected of such behavior. Exodus International, along with its board members and broader network, opposes this legislation as it inhibits the global Christian church’s mission to share the life-giving truth of the Gospel and extend the compassion of Christ to all.

Exodus Troubled by ELCA Vote to Affirm Same-Sex Relationships

August 21, 2009 by Exodus International

August 21, 2009

Orlando, FL. — Exodus International, the world’s largest interdenominational ministry helping those conflicted by same-sex attraction to live a life that reflects the Christian faith, is troubled by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s vote today to allow congregations to hire clergy involved in same-sex relationships. Exodus says this is a clear move away from biblical teaching on sexuality and a disconcerting approach to this issue.

Exodus Applauds Study Showing Change to be Possible & Sustainable

August 10, 2009 by Exodus International

August 9, 2009

Orlando, FL- Psychologists Stanton L. Jones and Mark A. Yarhouse announced the newest results of a study showing that sexual orientation change is not only possible, but sustainable at a symposium today at the American Psychological Association’s annual convention in Toronto. The findings directly contradict commonly expressed views of the mental health establishment that say this option is impossible and that the attempt to change is likely to produce harm. Two former APA presidents, Dr. Nicholas Cummings and Dr. Frank Farley, were present to discuss these findings.
