Control: The Last Stronghold of Lesbianism

January 25, 2005 by Exodus International

Written by Alan & Willa Medinger

I feel like a wounded animal, backed into a corner by her enemy and all I can do is to try and strike a frightening pose and make a fierce sound, hoping I can scare him away.” In one of many counseling sessions, the young lady was expressing–perhaps more clearly than ever–the feelings that had dominated her life and were such a major factor in her lesbianism.

This young woman did come out of lesbianism. She was set free and clearly is no longer that wounded animal desperately maintaining the front that will keep her safe. Sadly, though, she is one of the exceptional few. It is no secret that ministries like Regeneration have had far less success in ministry to women than in ministry to men. Typically, a Christian woman struggling with lesbianism comes to us wanting to live a life that is obedient to the Lord. She wants to be free from sexual involvement and free from falling into highly dependent idolatrous relationships with other women.

By and large the women are successful in this. But there they stop. They feel they are free from the sinful behavior, and thus acceptable to God, but their healing goes no further. They are not what they used to be, but what are they? [Read more...]

De-Sexualizing the Deeper Need

January 25, 1994 by Exodus International

Written by Alan Medinger

Twenty years ago, God set me free from homosexuality. The nature of my healing — an instant release from sexual fantasies and compulsion — was certainly a miracle. Usually, I don’t share this with people who come to us for the first time for the simple reason that this is the type of healing that everyone would like to receive, but few do. To encourage people to look for this kind of miracle, when in fact, for them the road out of homosexuality may be long and difficult, would be to set them up for discouragement.

At the time of my healing, I assumed that I had been “totally healed” of my homosexuality. After all, I no longer wanted to have sex with men, I desired my wife physically, and I simple did not struggle with lustful thoughts. Over the years, however, I have seen that I needed much more healing and change than I had experienced in that one evening in 1974. Homosexuality is more than sex, and there were other very significant parts of me that needed to be healed and changed. [Read more...]

Roots of Homosexuality

January 25, 1993 by Exodus International

Written by Bob Davies & Lori Rentzel

For a Christian coming out of homosexuality or lesbianism, the homosexual problem may loom as large as a giant Redwood tree: enormous, obvious, unchangeable, unshakable. But just like the root system beneath the Redwood forest, homosexuality also has roots. There are many things “below the ground” that feed the gay identity and hold it firmly in place. This article overviews some of these key issues.

We don’t believe that homosexuality is primarily inborn. We base our beliefs on the Bible’s teaching about homosexuality, backed up by the lack of conclusive scientific proof for such a theory. [Read more...]

The Difficult Task of Accepting Our True Identity

January 1, 1993 by Exodus International

Written by Alan Medinger

For many of us the word “different” goes back to earliest childood. Translated, it always meant “inferior” or “less than.” As we say over and over again, homosexuality is to a great extent an identity problem, and for most of us, one of the first identities we had was “different,” and this grew into ‘less than” and eventually into “homosexual.”
“You are different.” “You will never measure up.” “You can’t do what other men (women) do.”

Most of us know that overcoming homosexuality involves our taking on a new identity, and that this encompasses more than that we stop identifying ourselves as gay. It means a much deeper change in how we see ourselves and how we feel about ourselves. It means a change at the core of our being that will eventually enable us to respond spontaneously to the world around us a man or woman, not as a homosexual. [Read more...]

Repression or True Change?

January 1, 1986 by Exodus International

Written by Doug Houck

Frequently, individuals who have found freedom from homosexuality are confronted with charges that they are simply suppressing or repressing their true sexuality. The assertion is that we really need to accept ourselves as we are; that we should learn to be at peace with our homosexuality. Let us look at this charge and see if it will hold up.

Although they are similar, suppression and repression are two separate psychological phenomena. Suppression is a conscious act wherein the person refuses to acknowledge, deal with, or work through a certain situation. There are times in everyone’s life when suppression is a positive step to take. Typically, it is best to suppress actions when someone “makes us angry.” Then one can develop a healthy plan to work through the feelings. [Read more...]
